"National Park Week and Earth Day are a perfect opportunity to celebrate the commitment by volunteers to the stewardship of this City's unique historic landscape. The canalways, the riverwalk, and many public areas benefit from those who are willing to roll up their sleeves and participate this week and throughout the year," acknowledged Michael Creasey, Park Superintendent. Keep Lowell Beautiful Community Gardens Greenhouse Earth Day on Sunday, April 19, 12 noon to 4 p.m.: 3rd Annual Earth Day Festival at the Community Gardens Greenhouse celebrating the environment and partnerships in Lowell. Students from the Park-sponsored First Bloom Project will host participating national parks and agencies. Events include music and craft activities celebrating the opening of the planting season and other happenings during the week.
Location: 220 Aiken Street, Lowell NHP maintenance facility.
Corporate Clean-up on Wednesday, April 22, 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.:
Metabolix, a bioscience company in the Wannalancit Mill, will clean the area along the Western Canal to the Tremont Gatehouse and canalway along sections of the Northern Canal.
Location: Western Canal at the Tremont Gatehouse and along the Northern Canal walkway.
Earth Day Clean-up on Saturday, April 25, 8 a.m. to 1:00 pm: Come dressed to get dirty and make a dent in a winter’s worth of litter and debris along our canals and waterways! Pre-registration for this event by calling the Lowell National Historical Park volunteer office at 978-275-1740 or emailing at: Lowell_NHP_Volunteers@nps.gov
Location: Kick-off with speakers and team assignments at Middlesex Community College, at the City Building cafeteria, 33 Kearney Square, Lowell.
All events are rain-or-shine.
