Rocky Mountain National Park rangers are responding to an incident that occurred this afternoon above Emerald Lake. Two male climbers fell below Hallett Peak above the south side of Emerald Lake. They had been steep snow climbing. This area is roughly 2.5 miles from the Bear Lake Trailhead in a steep, rocky area.
Rangers were notified by cell phone of the fall around 2:15 p.m. The first rangers reached the two climbers at roughly 4:00 p.m. The extent of injuries are still being assessed, however they do not appear to be life threatening. Twenty-five park staff are involved in this incident and Larimer County Search and Rescue is assisting park rangers. This rescue will involve a technical lowering, followed by a litter carry-out for both of the victims.
One of the injured parties is 40 years old the other is 15 years old. This was part of a family outing. The hometowns of the two are unknown at this time, but they are both from Colorado.
