Possible Fort Closure

Possible Fort Closure

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on June 25, 2009. It is reproduced in full below.

The Star Fort of Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine may be closed on any day from June 29 until July 3rd for the installation of a new flagpole. "Old Glory will certainly be flying and the fort will be open on July 4th," says Chief of Interpretation Vince Vaise. The installation involves hoisting the 87-foot flagpole over the fort walls. The flagpole site is located next to the main entrance to the fort, necessitating the closure of the fort during the installation.

The grounds will not close and extra Ranger talks will be given during the day. The Visitor Center and orientation movie will also remain open.
