Jamaica Bay Programs

Tour Tilden by Bike

Fort Tilden, Bldg.1

10 a.m. - noon

Enjoy a bike ride through the maritime uplands and historic back fort of Fort Tilden. Bikes and helmets required. Reservations required.

Kite Flying

noon - 2 p.m.

Assemble, design and fly your very own kite! All supplies will be provided.

Introduction to Canoeing

10 a.m. - noon

No boating experience required. Participants should expect physical exertion. Bring water and sunscreen. There is a fee. Space is limited and reservations are required.

Kids camp overnight in tents, prepare meals outdoors, practice teamwork and explore nature in the urban outback of Floyd Bennett Field. Call (718) 338- 4306 for information on leader training, fees and scheduling.

Sandy Hook Programs

Seining the Salt Marsh

Beginning July 6, Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9:30-11:30 a.m. (Call the Sandy Hook Visitor Center for location or look for the “Seining Today" signs along Hartshorne Drive.)

Participate in this hands-on activity that explores the creatures in the bay. Please wear footwear you can get wet.

For individuals and families - children must be at least 7 yrs old and not afraid of the water. Wear clothes and shoes you can get wet. We provide lifejackets, canoes and instructions.

Battery Gunnison in World War II

Every Friday in July from 1 to 5 p.m. Beach parking fee applies at the Gunnison parking lot until 4 p.m.

Meet an historian in World War II uniform who will guide you through the battery to show you how it operated and defended New York Harbor during the war.

Explore a Sandy Hook habitat on this after dark program. Bring a flashlight.

Music on the Hook

Sandy Hook Summer Beach Concerts. On the Beach at Area E, Wednesdays at 6 p.m. The Sandy Hook Foundation sponsors this annual FREE concert series. If weather is a factor, a decision will be made at 2 p.m. on the day of the concert. Call 732-291-7733 or check www.sandyhookfoundationnj.org for rain cancellations.

Staten Island Programs

The 54th and Shaw

Fort Wadsworth Visitor Center

Saturday, July 11 at 1 p.m.

Learn about the 54th Volunteers and one-time Staten Islander Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. Shaw made history on July 18, 1863 inspiring monuments and the film “Glory" which was based on Shaw’s letter while he trained and lead the regiment. Reservations required.

“Hoop It Up" 5-on-5 Basketball Tournament

Miller Field Ranger Station

Saturdays, July 11, 18 & 25 at 10 a.m.

Boys and girls can ‘hoop it up’ with National Park Service rangers for a 5-on-5 single elimination basketball tournament. Prizes will be awarded. The deadline to sign up is June 27. The tournament is free.

Fort Wadsworth

The visitor center is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p. m. Ranger-led tours of the fortifications are conducted Wednesday through Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Great Kills Park

The Education Field Station is open Friday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for permits and park information.

Miller Field

The Miller Field Ranger Station is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a. m. to 4:30 p. m.

Permits Information for Staten Island, GATE

Fishing and bird watching/nature study parking permits are available for the 2009 season at Miller Field,

Fort Wadsworth and Great Kills Park. Boat Launch Permits are only issued at Great Kills Park.
