SECOND SUMMER DUI CHECKPOINT SET FOR SATURDAY AT LAKE MEAD
LAS VEGAS - Park rangers will be conducting a DUI checkpoint this Saturday, July 25 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. It will be in the area of Las Vegas Bay on Lakeshore Road in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
The first checkpoint on July 11 resulted in 5 arrests. In 2008, there were a total of 193 arrests in the recreation area.
National Park Service rangers along with officers from Hoover Dam Police, Nevada Highway Patrol, Las Vegas Metro Police Dept., Boulder City Police Dept., and Southern Nevada Agency Partnership (SNAP) Law Enforcement Team will be on the lookout for impaired drivers.
"We have a responsiblity to keep our visitors safe. Taking impared drivers off the road is a top priority." said Chief Ranger Mary Hinson. "We hope these checkpoints are a reminder to those who are inclined to drive impared that we take DUI seriously at Lake Mead," says Hinson.
It's a federal crime to operate a vehicle or boat under the influence in a National Park Service area. Penalties include fines up to $5000, maximum 6 months in jail, and up to five years probation.
The next DUI checkpoint is scheduled for August 15.
