Oil Blobs

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on July 27, 2009. It is reproduced in full below.

(Corpus Christi, Texas)-Superintendent Joe Escoto announced today, that beginning Tuesday, July 28, 2009, interagency efforts will begin to clean-up oil from park beaches. The oil that appeared on the National Seashore is similar to that recently found on South Padre Island. The clean-up efforts will help ensure the safety of park visitors and wildlife although at this point it is not clear if the situation will worsen. This joint effort which includes the General Land Office (GLO), the U.S. Coast Guard, and Padre Island National Seashore will begin at the Malaquite Beach area in the early morning and will continue south.

The source of the spill is still unknown. The park will remain open; however, we ask visitors to be cautious on the beach and avoid contact with the oil.
