Fire Damages Miller Field

Fire Damages Miller Field

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 24, 2009. It is reproduced in full below.

On Saturday evening, Aug. 22, a US Park Police patrol officer discovered a fire in the public restrooms that are attached to the Miller Field Ranger Station. The fire caused extensive damage to the restrooms and the FDNY believes that either arson or an electrical problem is the cause. An investigation is underway.

Gateway officials have closed the ranger station and restrooms to fully assess the damage and make the necessary repairs. Officials estimate that the building will be closed until early fall. During that time the ranger staff will establish a public contact station in the Miller Field Swamp White Oak building on the west side of the field. Portable toilets will be put in place to temporarily replace the closed restrooms.
