Parks jump into Twittering (Homestead)

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 27, 2009. It is reproduced in full below.

“Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Parks are excited about the newly launched pilot program on Twitter," says Superintendent Dan Kimball. The parks recognize the ongoing need to provide real-time information to interested parties on the status of various park activities, events, and incidents.

"We are trying to do everything we can to be on the cutting edge of technology in our outreach and communication efforts. We think that developing and utilizing a broad mix of new communication tools will connect the Parks to our neighboring communities and partners so they can be more knowledgeable about and experience the parks, either virtually or in person," said Kimball. Using Twitter as a communication tool will also allow us to quickly communicate emergency information on hurricanes and fires.

The parks plan to use Twitter to distribute press releases, promote events and public meetings, and release emergency management announcements.
