Superintendent Mike Murray announced today that motorists may encounter temporary traffic delays on NC 12 in the Bodie Island section of the park from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009. Weather-permitting, the National Park Service (NPS) contractor, JMR Investments, will relocate the Bodie Island Lifesaving Station and the old Coast Guard Station structures from their current location to a nearby site on Bodie Island. The new site is located west of the Coquina Beach parking area and the intersection of NC 12 and Lighthouse Bay Drive, approximately 0.6 linear miles south of the current location of the buildings.
Temporary delays of up to 20 - 30 minutes can be expected for north and southbound lanes as the contractor and Dominion Power move the structures and the powerline. The access road to the Bodie Island Lighthouse and the Visitor Center will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon; the Visitor Center reopens at 2:00 p.m.
Representatives of the NPS, Dominion Power, the NC Highway Patrol, and the contractor will be on-site to expedite the move and delays should be minimal. In case of inclement weather, the move will be delayed until the following week.
