National Park Week to Highlight “Share a Park - Shape a Life" Activities in Parks
SCRANTON, PA - Nature, history and exploration come together at Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA during the annual National Park Week celebration set for April 17th -25th, 2010. This year’s theme is “Share a Park - Shape a Life." Among the hallmark programs featured at Steamtown’s museum complex is the Junior Ranger Program for children aged 6 - 12, an educational program for children under 6 “Let’s Explore Steamtown," the popular theater programs “America’s Legacy - Your National Parks" and “The Steamtown Story" and special Ranger guided programs with behind the scenes Locomotive Shop tours and Turntable demonstrations.
Two new programs being introduced for National Park Week are a new special children’s program called “The Circus Trains" in the parks Children Education and Discovery Center and the “Take a Hike" program, a one hour hiking trail program departing from the Visitor Center and exploring the Central Railroad of New Jersey trail, Mattes Street tower, and a variety of historic structures and landmarks along the route.
And best of all, from April 17th to 25th during National Park Week, the parks $6.oo admission fee is waived.
Steamtown’s popular Scranton Limited short yard train ride will operate from Wednesday through Sunday at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. Many historic topics are covered in the ranger-led train educational program, which lasts 30 minutes. A fee of $3.00, for children 6 and older is required for the Scranton Limited short train ride.
April 17th to the 25th also marks Earth Week and Steamtown in partnership with the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Conservation Alliance will participate in the “Great NEPA Clean-up" event. Park employees and volunteers will spend Tuesday, April 20, 2010 cleaning up park visitor use areas, parking lots, roads and trails and the rail right of way.
Located in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Steamtown is open daily from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. From I-81, follow exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway); then, follow the signs to the main entrance at Lackawanna and Cliff Avenues.
