Summary: Learn about GIS and GPS with Nancy Schock, Jeff Pinkard, and Dave Hammond. Fee is $50. Teacher credit available. Registration required. Call 719-748-3253.

Details: In the course students will receive an introduction to the basic concepts of GIS and uses of the ESRI ArcMAPsoftware package and GPS. Topics will include: where data comes from, different types of GPS units, data sources, metadata, essential components of a good map, GIS capabilities, and some ways that GIS is used in Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. There will be a field trip within the park to learn GPS methods. More information on this and other summer seminars is available at www.nps.gov/flfo.

Directions: To reach Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, travel 35 miles west on Highway 24 from Colorado Springs. At the town of Florissant, turn left onto Teller County Road # 1 and travel 2 miles to the Visitor Center entrance.
