Grand Canyon, Ariz. - At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, rangers responded to a report that a vehicle had collided with a tree on Center Road on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.
Upon arriving at the scene, rangers found a pick-up truck crumpled into a tree near the intersection of Center and Shuttle Roads. Center Road was immediately closed from its intersection with the South Entrance Road to its intersection with Market Plaza in order to facilitate extrication of the truck's occupants and investigation of the incident. The closure remained in effect until approximately 11:00 p.m.
Two of the vehicle's three male occupants were transported to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. The third, a young man from Arizona, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
Further information regarding the truck's occupants is being withheld pending family notifications.
The accident is being investigated by the National Park Service with the assistance of the Coconino County Sheriff's Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
