WEST GLACIER, MONT. - Glacier National Park officials invite the public to learn how researchers count mountain goats and get population numbers in the park. This Friday, Jami Belt, Glacier Citizen Science Coordinator, presents a discussion on using citizen scientists to monitor mountain goat populations. She will also discuss baseline estimates of mountain goat populations and their distribution in Glacier.
This "Brown Bag" presentation (bring your own lunch), Goats, Citizens, and Citizen Scientists Studying Goats, will be held on Friday, September 24 from 12 - 12:30 p.m. at the West Glacier Community Building in park headquarters area. The Citizen Science Program at Glacier National Park is supported by the Glacier National Park Fund.
Belt has been Glacier's Citizen Science coordinator since 2006 and recently completed her Master of Science degree in Wildlife Biology at the University of Montana. Belt's thesis was a comparison study of the estimates of mountain goat abundance by volunteers to estimates by biologists and aerial surveys. As a result of her work, she is the recent recipient of the 2010 Rocky Mountains Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit Student Award.
