The National Park Service is pleased to announce fee free days from Saturday, January, 15th - Monday, January 17th, in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. birthday weekend. This includes sites like Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument as well as all 394 national park areas across the United States.
In addition to fees being waived there will also be activities for visitors. On Saturday, January 17th, geologist, Dr. Bob Carnein, will be at Florissant Fossil Beds in the fossil lab from 1:00pm - 3:00pm. Do you have any rocks that need identifying? Bring them along with your curiosity and see how fossil discoveries still take place at the Monument.
On Sunday, January 16th Ranger Shawn Frizzell, will open up the Hornbek Homestead for hot chocolate around the wood stove and a brief visit to the 1880’s. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the historic ranch followed by a 2 - 3 mile nature hike that will start and end at the homestead. Anyone interested in the hike must be ready for inclement weather. Please wear warm, layered clothing, appropriate hiking boots, and bring snacks and water.
Dr. Carnein and Ranger Frizzell will be offering other programs throughout the month.
Please call (719) 748- 3253 for further information and weather updates.
