PORTER, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will be conducting short-term closures of U.S. 12 at the intersection with State Road 49 (S.R. 49) Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, March 22-24. The complete closure of U.S. 12 will last 15-20 minutes at a time between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day.
Crews will be demolishing the existing bridge structure on S.R. 49 and the road will be closed to prevent debris from falling onto passing cars. The short-term closures will be coordinated with the South Shore train schedules to avoid delays along the rail line.
The work is part of the project to build a section of the Dunes Kankakee Trail, a bike path that will extend from Lake Michigan to southern Porter County. The project is a collaboration between INDOT, the town of Porter, the Porter County Convention, Recreation and Visitors Commission, the Indiana Dunes State Park and the National Lakeshore.
INDOT reminds drivers to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through a construction zone. For the latest news and information about INDOT, visit www.in.gov/indot or www.trafficwise.IN.gov. Contact the LaPorte District toll free at 1-855-GO-INDOT.
