Lowell National Historical Park is seeking volunteers to assist with a variety of seasonal operations, programs, and events. Consider the array of opportunities to become engaged at Lowell's national park - one of 394 areas of the National Park Service throughout the country:

Lowell Parks Conservation Trust Canal Lock Tending Training
Meet at Lower Locks, UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center.
Volunteer canal lock tenders are needed during April & May 2011 to support the Concord River Whitewater Rafting program this spring.
This is an exciting physical opportunity to be a part of the living history of the Pawtucket Canal! You get to operate the historic Lower Locks and raise boats up through the chambers. Operate canal locks on weekends (in April & May, trainings occur in March & possibly April), aid in passage of whitewater rafts as part of Trust's Concord River whitewater rafting program. Close locks, open wickets to raise water level and send rafts through to next chamber.

Community Garden's Greenhouse 5th Annual Earth Day Festival
The Community Gardens Greenhouse will host our FREE Annual Earth Day Festival at 220 Aiken Street, the Lowell National Historical Park Maintenance Facility and home to the Community Gardens Greenhouse, rain or shine.
We're growing communities from the ground up! If you're curious about community gardening, clean waters, forestry, sustainable industries and energies, organic agricultural, then join us. Or perhaps, you just want to relax, listen to great music, keep the kids busy. Tell your family, bring your friends!
We've invited environmental organizations, neighborhood advocacy groups, artists and local businesses to share their knowledge. There will be loads of hands-on fun for the whole family: workshops, activities for kids, tour the greenhouse, listen to music, walk along the river. Earth Day Cleanup -Meet at Middlesex Community College Cafeteria, Lower Locks Area.
Come dressed to get dirty and make a dent in a winter's worth of litter and debris along our canals and waterways! Pre-registration for this event by calling the Lowell National Historical Park volunteer office at 978-970-50484 or emailing: Jonathan_Parker@nps.gov.
Location: Kick-off with speakers and team assignments at Middlesex Community College, at the City Building cafeteria, 33 Kearney Square, Lowell.
