Join Fort Sumter National Monument for a planning workshop on Saturday morning, June 25, 2011. The event takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the historic garage of the U.S. Coast Guard Historic District at 1815 I’On Avenue on Sullivan’s Island.
“We invite the public to join us as we plan for the future management of the lighthouse and Historic District," announced Superintendent Tim Stone.
The Historic District represents the evolution of events important in United States maritime history from 1895 to 1962. Commissioned on June 15, 1962 the Sullivan's Island lighthouse was the last major lighthouse to be built in the United States. It replaced the original Charleston harbor light on Morris Island, which was built in 1876. Other significant structures include a Life Saving Service quarters building and boat house, a Coast Artillery bunker, a U.S. Coast Guard garage and signal tower. In 2008 the title to the lighthouse was transferred from the Coast Guard to the National Park Service.
