Superintendent Joe Escoto announced that Padre Island National Seashore is evacuating gulf beaches and will close the park as well as access roads to park beaches as of Friday, July 29, 2011 by midafternoon. The park is expected to reopen Saturday, July 30, 2011 when conditions are considered to be safe by park personnel. No overnight camping will be permitted. The closure is due to the anticipated adverse storm and tidal conditions which will be caused by Tropical storm Don presently southeast of Corpus Christi, Texas.

The Malaquite Beach Campground, Visitor Center, and Bird Island Basin will also close today, Friday, July 29, 2011. Please call the Visitor Center for more information at (361) 949-8068.
