Fire Island National Seashore closures during Hurricane Irene

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 26, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

In advance of the approach of Hurricane Irene, Fire Island National Seashore has canceled its programs and will close park facilities by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 26. All boats are expected to leave the marinas at Watch Hill and Sailors Haven by the end of the day. Backcountry camping and the Watch Hill Campground were closed earlier on Thursday, August 25. Ferry service to Watch Hill and Sailors Haven will also be suspended early.

Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management issued a mandatory evacuation notice for all of Fire Island at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 26. Additional sources of local information and links to current information may be followed at http://suffolkcountyny.gov/emo/suffolk-alert-messages.html.

Park facilities are expected to be closed at least through Monday, Aug. 29, and will reopen as conditions permit.
