Point Reyes National Seashore to Host Open House Meetings on Commercial Shellfish Operations in Drakes Estero on October 18, 19, and 20, 2011

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Oct. 12, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

Point Reyes Station - The National Park Service will host three open house meetings on Oct. 18, 19, and 20 to provide information and gather public comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (Draft EIS) for the Drakes Bay Oyster Company (DBOC) Special Use Permit (SUP) at Point Reyes National Seashore. The meetings will be identical in format and held at the following locations:

Tuesday, Oct. 18, 6:00-8:00 p.m. - Dance Palace Community Center, 503 B Street, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956

Wednesday, Oct. 19, 6:00-8:00 p.m. - Fort Mason Center, Building D, San Francisco, CA 94123

Thursday, Oct. 20, 6:00-8:00 p.m. - Tamalpais High School Student Center, 700 Miller Avenue, Mill Valley, CA 94941

A Spanish language interpreter will be present at each meeting.

The 60-day public comment period on the Draft EIS for the Drakes Bay Oyster Company (DBOC) Special Use Permit (SUP) runs through Nov. 29, 2011. The Draft EIS explores a range of alternatives, including a no-action alternative under which DBOC's existing authorizations would expire on Nov. 30, 2012 and subsequent conversion of Drakes Estero to full wilderness. Under the three action alternatives, the Secretary of Interior would exercise his discretion to issue a new 10-year SUP to DBOC to for commercial oyster operations in Drakes Estero from Nov. 30, 2012 to Nov. 30, 2022. The action alternatives present differing levels of onshore facilities and infrastructure and offshore operations for consideration.
