Gateway National Recreation Area, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and Brooklyn College will host a scientific symposium concerning Jamaica Bay at the Brooklyn College Student Center on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011. State of the Bay: Past, Present and Future - Revisited is an all-day event featuring research by top scientists in the preservation and restoration of Jamaica Bay in New York Harbor.
Speakers will address a range of issues impacting the ecology of Jamaica Bay, a unique and irreplaceable ecological resource that has survived and often thrived alongside human habitats. Topics will include water quality and efforts to improve its habitat through projects such as marsh restoration and oyster replenishment. Content will span from the intermediate to advanced level. Those who register for the October 20 symposium have the option of attending a cruise of Jamaica Bay on Friday, Oct. 21, aboard the American Princess. The three-hour tour is only open to those who have registered for the all-day symposium on Thursday, October 20. Those interested in attending both events should mention this in the body of their message when they register.
State of the Bay: Past, Present and Future - Revisited is one of a series of symposia hosted by Gateway every few years to highlight on-going and emerging research. The original event, State of the Bay: Past, Present and Future, took place at the U.S. Customs House in 2008.
