Prescribed Burn January 4 and 5

Everglades National Park Fire Management will be conducting two prescribed burns on Thursday, January 5 & Friday, January 6, weather permitting. On Thursday, January 5th, the Context Road (north) prescribed burn will begin operations around 10:00. This area is located west of Homestead General Airport. The goal of this burn will to reduce accumlated saw-grass and debris along the Eastern boundary of the park that will help to prevent or reduce the severity of human caused wildfires in the future. Winds are predicted to be out of the North ranging from 6-8 mph. Communities located along the eastern park boundary might experience light smoke throughout the day. The area to be burned is 1,100 acres.

On Friday, January 6th, there will be a smaller prescribed burn around the park headquarters building located behind the Edward R Coe Visitor Center at the Homestead entrance of the park. This prescribed burn will begin operations around 10:00 and last around 2-3 hours. Winds are predicted to be out of the NE around 5 mph. The unit is 6 acres.
