New Moon Star Gazing Event

New Moon Star Gazing Event

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on March 21, 2012. It is reproduced in full below.

On Saturday, March 24, 2012, at 10:00 pm, Everglades National Park will host a New Moon Star Party event. The park is a perfect spot for viewing the wonders of the night sky due to its location away from the lights of the local communities.

A Ranger guided program about the constellations and the night sky will be presented. Telescopes might be available for viewing the celestial night sky and will provide an opportunity for visitors to see for themselves what is visible in the world above us. Come early to adjust to the darkness. Bring a flashlight and dress for the weather.

The public is welcome. No fee or advance reservations are necessary. Since bright headlights impair night vision, we ask that all participants arrive no later than 9:00 pm. The event will be held at Mahogany Hammock, 20 miles from the Ernest Coe Visitor Center.
