WEST GLACIER, MONT. -National Park Service and US Forest Service Firefighters are working to secure the perimeter of the Avalanche Wildland Fire, located on Mount Brown, near Avalanche Lake on the west side of Glacier National Park. The Avalanche Lake Trail remains closed until further notice.
Today's fire suppression activities include aerial water drops and fire crews working to secure fire line on the west and north sides of the fire. Some of the fire area is rocky and steep terrain which limits the probability of the fire to move or progress much.
The estimated size of the Avalanche Wildland Fire is approximately 45 acres. About 25 fire firefighters from Glacier National Park, Flathead National Forest, and Kootenai National Forest, in addition to eight smoke jumpers, are working in partnership to suppress the fire.
Smoke was reported on Saturday, September 1 at approximately 2:30 p.m. and the cause of the fire is believed to be lightning. Smoke is visible throughout various locations in the park, and in some locations in the Flathead Valley.
