The National Weather Service is predicting that the effects of Hurricane Sandy will impact the Outer Banks Group units, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial, by Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 with storm conditions continuing through Monday, Oct. 29, 2012.
In anticipation of this weather event, Ocracoke Campground will close at noon on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 and remain closed for the season.(All other NPS campgrounds closed earlier in September and October.) The Ocracoke Campground reservation system has been suspended for the season.All National Park Visitor Centers including Ocracoke Visitor Center, Hatteras Island, Bodie Island and Wright Brothers and Fort Raleigh Visitor Centers will remain open until close of business Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, then will remain closed until further notice.
Due to forecasted strong northeasterly gale force winds, storm surges, high lunar tides and rough ocean conditions, park beaches will be closed to off-road vehicles by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 and remain closed until further notice.
