Rim Rock Drive to Reopen

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Jan. 11, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

Colorado National Monument will Reopen the

Upper Section of Rim Rock Drive at 2:30 p.m. Today

Friday, Jan. 11, 2013 at 2:30 p.m., Colorado National Monument will reopen the upper section of Rim Rock Drive from DS Road to Independence Monument Overlook to all traffic. Earlier today, the Upper Section of Rim Rock Drive received over 6 inches of snow and strong winds were causing blowing and drifting. The road has been plowed and sanded, making reopening possible.

Please use caution. Expect winter driving conditions with some patches of snow, ice, strong winds and drifting snow. Be alert for snowplows on the roadway.

During the winter months be prepared to encounter ice and snow conditions at any time and in any location on Rim Rock Drive even when roads in the valley are clear. Be especially alert for ice on the switchbacks on both the east and west hills of Rim Rock Drive.

Information on future developing storms and temporary road closures can be found by calling Colorado National Monument's Winter Information Hotline at 970-858-3617, ext 402.
