LAKE MEAD VISITOR CENTER REOPENS FEB 15
BOULDER CITY, Nev. - After two years of renovations, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Alan Bible Visitor Center will reopen Feb. 15.
Located near the Boulder Entrance station off of U.S. Highway 93, the park's main visitor center has been closed since September 2010 while it underwent a $2.9 million renovation.It will now be open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Inside, visitors may browse through National Park Service exhibits, purchase park passes and talk to park rangers about what recreational opportunities are available at Lake Mead NRA. The Western National Parks Association gift shop, which sells books, souvenirs and Native American fine arts and crafts, is also located inside the visitor center.
Outside, there is a desert botanical garden with trees and shrubs found throughout Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
The remodeled building qualifies for a LEED silver rating, due to its use of sustainable products. New windows and a new photovoltaic system will offset up to 25 percent of energy consumption at the facility.
The walkways to the building were replaced and an elevator was added for more accessibility. Additionally, the air conditioning and lighting were improved in the exhibit hall, lobby, offices and auditorium. The auditorium also received a new audio visual system where the new park film will be shown.
The Visitor Center, which is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, was constructed in 1966 and is named after former U.S. Senator Alan Bible. The renovation project was funded through capital improvement funds provided by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act.
The visitor center located at the park headquarters, 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City, Nev., will remain open Monday through Friday.
