UPCOMING EVENTS AT LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA MARCH 16-31

BOULDER CITY, NEV. - The following events are happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area March 16-31.

Explore Cholla Forest March 16

Take a moderate five-mile guided hike up an alluvial fan to an interesting community of unhuggable teddy bear chollas March 16. Learn how this cholla forest grows in the desert. Call 702-293-8990 to register or for more information. Reservations are required. Dogs are not permitted.

Evening stroll at Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail March 16

Go on an easy two-mile guided moonlight stroll through the tunnels used during the construction of the Hoover Dam March 16. Bring a flashlight. Call 702-293-8990 to register or for more information. Reservations are required. Dogs are not permitted.

Six Tunnels Half Marathon March 16

Around 1,000 runners will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area 8 a.m. to noon March 16 during the 11th annual Las Vegas Six Tunnels to Hoover Dam St. Patrick's Day Run. The race includes a 1-mile stroll, 5K, half marathon and two-person relay run along River Mountains Loop Trail and Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail. Hike White Owl Canyon March 17

Go on a moderate three-mile hike through Lake Mead National Recreation Area's White Owl Canyon March 17. This is an intriguing hike that begins near the water's edge and winds into a narrow canyon where birds of prey have been spotted in the past. Explore a twisting wash with multiple signs of life. Hike Liberty Bell Arch March 23

Traverse a narrow wash through ancient river beds past the remains of a World War II-era mine on a moderate guided six-mile hike March 23. Great American Cleanup March 23

Take part in the 2013 Great American Cleanup 9 a.m. to noon March 23 at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. People across America will be cleaning, beautifying and improving quality of life in their communities. Wings and Wildlife Festival March 23

Park rangers are participating in the fifth annual Wings and Wildlife Festival 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 23 just outside Lake Mead National Recreation Area at Davis Camp in Bullhead City, Ariz., and the Pyramid Day Use Area, Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trail in Laughlin, Nev. The free event includes live reptiles, a bird hike, yoga, kayaking, hiking, and workshops for photography and nature, sketching nature, and watching wildlife with binoculars. During the KidsFest 10 a.m. to noon, there will be special activities for kids ages 1-15. Hike Hamblin Mountain March 30

Join rangers on a rugged hike through amazing geology showing an array of patterns and colors during a strenuous eight-mile guided hike at Hamblin Mountain March 30. Enjoy fabulous views of Boulder Narrows, Pinto Valley Wilderness and Boulder Peak. Bring binoculars to possibly capture a glimpse of desert bighorn sheep and other wildlife.
