You can tell much about a person by their possessions. That is definitely true of Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife Mamie. Some of the many possessions they amassed in their 53 years of married life are now featured in a book, Eisenhower National Historic Site Museum Collections.
The 64-page, visually appealing book displays pictures of artifacts, historic photographs and brief text to tell the story of Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower. Sections of the book tell the story of Eisenhower's military career and presidency. First Lady Mamie Eisenhower's love of family and fashion is evident through the artifacts selected to tell her story. The Eisenhowers' possessions also show the popular culture and leisure activities prevalent in the 1950s. Even Eisenhower's interest in farming and raising registered Angus cattle is evident through artifacts featured in the book.
"The book is a wonderful take home item to remind visitors of their visit to the site while they learn more about the Eisenhowers," Supervisory Historian Carol Hegeman noted.
The publication is the work of the National Park Service Museum Management Program and the Eisenhower National Historic Site staff.
