Enjoy a day of family fun with hands-on activities for children and families on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at John Muir National Historic Site (NHS) in Martinez, CA. The program begins at 10 AM and ends at 2 PM. Park staff will run rotating activity stations in the park orchards.
In the spirit of John Muir, one of the greatest naturalists and conservationists the United States has ever known, Family Days give children and families a chance to connect with nature and experience aspects of Victorian life. Family Days continue through August with varying activities.
On May 25th, visitors can get their hands dirty identifying bugs and covered in flour baking bread in an horno, a Spanish-style oven. Participants will also be able to churn butter to spread on their hot bread. Other options include making journals and practicing calligraphy with quills and ink. Victorian-era games such as croquet and horseshoes will be available. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lunch and have a picnic among the trees.
Created in 1964, John Muir NHS preserves the home, landscapes, and gravesite of conservationist and national park advocate John Muir. Mt. Wanda preserves 326 acres of grasslands and oak woods that Muir set aside more than a century ago.
