Free park admission Aug 25
The National Park Service turns 97 Aug. 25. To celebrate, admission to all national parks, including Lake Mead National Recreation Area, is free. Cake will be served at the Alan Bible Visitor Center after 10 a.m., while supplies last. Rangers at the visitor center will also host National Park trivia games throughout the day. Plan a personal National Park Service birthday trip at www.npsbirthday.org. Share birthday wishes, stories, pictures or video. Fee-free days only apply to entrance fees. Fees for camping, lake use or use of concessions still apply. At the Alan Bible Visitor Center, the Western National Parks Association Bookstore will offer a 15 percent discount on bookstore items, such as books, postcards, T-shirts and other gifts. Ranger Campground Program: 'The Tale of the Threatened Tortoises' Sept 6
Join Ranger Ben at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Boulder Beach Campground Amphitheater to learn why the desert tortoise is a threatened species in the Mojave Desert and what people can do to help the species survive into the future. Reservations are not required. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
Stargazing party Sept 7
Discover the night sky with Lake Mohave District park rangers at Nevada Telephone Cove at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 7. Four 10-inch telescopes, provided by the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Northern Arizona University, will be available so visitors can take a closer look at the stars and planets. There will also be an interpretive talk on the history and astronomy of the North Star. No pets allowed. Reservations are not needed for this free event. For more information, call 928-754-3272.
Ranger Campground Program: 'Exploring the Watershed of the Colorado River' Sept 7
Join Ranger Toyya at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Boulder Beach Campground Amphitheater to learn about the Colorado River watershed and its journey to Lake Mead. Reservations are not required. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
Ironman 70.3 World Championship Sept 8
Around 2,100 triathletes will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area Sept. 8 during the Ironman 70.3 World Championship. The bike course travels along Northshore Road from mile marker 1 to mile marker 17.5. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays along Northshore Road. Drivers should use caution when passing cyclists. Cyclists are reminded that they must bike in single file on the roadways. Cycling abreast is not permitted within Lake Mead NRA. WON BASS US Open Tournament Sept 9-11
Around 300 anglers from across the world will compete in the 31st Annual WON BASS U.S. Open Sept. 9-11 at Lake Mead. The tournament has been called the toughest west coast tournament ever. Lake Mead Institute Teacher Workshop Sept 14, 17, 21 and 24
Earn two credits with the UNLV graduate course Regional Professional Development Program through the Lake Mead Institute's Teacher Professional Development Series: Climate Change in the Desert Southwest. Workshops are held 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 14, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 21 and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 24. Educators will leave the institute with grade-level appropriate climate change lesson plans, awareness of climate change impact on Southern Nevada and service project implementation ideas and plans for the 2013-2014 school year. Participants will be reimbursed for their course registration and will receive a transportation stipend for their fieldtrip(s). Mountain Man Triathlon Sept 22
Around 600 triathletes will run, bike and swim through Lake Mead National Recreation Area Sept. 22 during the 16th annual Mountain Man Las Vegas Triathlon. The swim portion of the race takes place at Boulder Beach. Then, athletes will bike along Lakeshore Drive and Northshore Road. The race concludes with a run along River Mountains Loop Trail and Boulder Beach. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays along Lakeshore Drive and Northshore Road. Aquatic Invasive Species Workshop Sept 24
A panel of quagga mussel experts will provide a free workshop for the general public from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Water Safety Center at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Quagga mussels pose a threat to water delivery systems, hydroelectric facilities, agriculture, recreational boating and the ecosystem. Recreational vessels are one of the transporters of these species into uninfested waterways. Therefore, Lake Mead NRA, the Nevada Department of Wildlife, Arizona Game & Fish, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission are teaming up to teach boaters to learn how to prevent the spread. They will discuss proper clean, drain, dry protocols; state inspection programs; the NDOW AIS sticker and how U.S. Fish and Wildlife funding will soon provide free hot washes. Today, it is the largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance publicly held lands for the greater enjoyment and enrichment of all who visit. Fee-free days only apply to entrance fees. National Public Lands Day Government Wash cleanup Sept 28
Come be a part of National Public Lands Day during a litter cleanup at Government Wash 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 28. This area of Lake Mead National Recreation Area is heavily used by summer visitors. Volunteers are needed to lend a hand to clean up the area. Individuals, families and groups are encouraged to participate. The first 100 participants will receive a free one-time pass to the park (limit one per family). National Public Lands Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trail event Sept 28
Volunteers are needed to help complete the construction of the "Contractor's Camp" interpretive trail at the Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trail in Laughlin 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 28. The work will involve moving rocks, gravel and decomposed granite using wheelbarrows, shovels, buckets and small sledge hammers. If trail work is too hard, there will be opportunities to help with a litter cleanup event. Individuals, families and groups are encouraged to participate. The first 25 participants will receive a free one-time pass to the park (limit one per family).
