The wooden staircase at the Sea Lion Overlook will be closed for repairs from January 6 through March 1, 2014. National Park Service (NPS) staff will replace the stairs using non-leaching materials in order to reduce potential delivery of pollutants to the Point Reyes Headlands Area of Special Biological Significance (ASBS), a State Water Quality Protection Area.
The Sea Lion Overlook stairs were identified as a discharge location to the Point Reyes Headlands ASBS in a State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) study. The Sea Lion Overlook project is part of a SWRCB Proposition 84 water quality improvement project grant managed by the County of Marin. The NPS, in partnership with the County, has completed a number of other additional projects under this grant, including installation of water quality best management practices that will help the county and park ranchers meet water quality regulations and aid in the protection of the unique aquatic resources contained within the Point Reyes Headlands ASBS and Duxbury Reef ASBS.
