BOULDER CITY, NEV. - The following events are happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area March 15-April 12.
Six Tunnels to Hoover Dam St. Patrick's Day Run March 15
Around 1,000 runners will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area March 15 during the 14th annual Six Tunnels to Hoover Dam St. Patrick's Day Run. The race includes a 1-mile stroll, 5K, half marathon and two-person relay run along River Mountains Loop Trail and Historic Railroad Trail. Hike Historic Railroad Trail March 16
Travel back in time on the Historic Railroad Trail and learn about the formation of the unique landscape around Lake Mead March 16. This is a story of fire and water and the forces that shaped the area, including how people used the landscape to build Hoover Dam and create the lake. Hike White Rock Canyon March 16
Explore the beauty of White Rock Canyon March 16. Walk the wash which leads through a canyon, down to the mighty Colorado River. During this moderate hike, learn about the geology which shapes this wondrous area. This is also a hike to better understand desert safety and best hike practices. Hike Redstone March 17

Hike Pinto Valley Wilderness Area March 18
Hike through geologically striking washes and end at an old sentry cottonwood tree which is the "gatekeeper" to the Pinto Valley March 18. Lower Colorado River Water Trail Clean-up March 22
Join the Lower Colorado River Water Trail Alliance and the National Park Service to clean-up a three-mile area of the lower Colorado River 9 a.m. to noon March 22. Volunteers will do a sweep of the Willow Beach area either by canoe/kayak, foot or diving. Registration is limited to the first 50 land volunteers, 50 divers and 50 kayakers. Volunteers will need to register by contacting Nancy Bernard at 702-293-8714 or Nancy_Bernard@nps.gov. The Lower Colorado River Water Trail Advisory Group/Alliance is an association of public agencies, local businesses, non-profits and individuals who are committed to the protection, enhancement and promotion of water trails within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Great American Clean-up March 29
Take part in the 2014 Great American Cleanup 9 a.m. to noon March 29 at Lake Mead National Recreation Area by volunteering in a litter removal event at Government Wash. Every year, more than 4 million volunteers lend a hand in 20,000+ communities from coast to coast to participate in cleaning, beautifying and improving quality of life. Individuals, families and groups welcome. Anyone under the age of 18 will need to complete a parental approval form signed by a parent or guardian. University Forum Lecture: America's Wilderness Conservation April 15
Garry Oye, National Park Service chief of wilderness stewardship, will provide a University Forum Lecture "America's Wilderness - Celebrating 50 Years of Conservation" 7:30 p.m. April 15 at the UNLV Marjorie Barrick Museum Auditorium. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Wilderness Act. Oye will provide a brief history of wilderness-preservation efforts in the U.S., introduce the audience to several of his favorite wilderness areas and discuss management challenges currently being faced in wilderness protection. Hope 4 Lives Rockin Rabbit Half Marathon and 5K April 6
Around 400 runners will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area along Historic Railroad Trail April 6 during the Rockin Rabbit Half Marathon and 5K Run. For more information on this permitted event, visit https://sites.google.com/site/hope4lives/rockin-rabbit-2014.
BBSC Rage Triathlon April 12
Around 1,200 athletes will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area Aril 12 during the BBSC Rage Triathlon. The race includes sprint, Olympic and half triathlon courses. The swim portion of the race takes place at Boulder Beach. Then, athletes will bike along Lakeshore Drive and Northshore Road. The race concludes with a run along River Mountains Loop and Historic Railroad Tunnel trails. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays along Lakeshore Drive and Northshore Road. Drivers should use caution when passing cyclists. Cyclists are reminded that they must bike in single file on the roadways. Cycling abreast is not permitted within Lake Mead NRA.
