Seneca Falls, NY-What do state funerals, AIDS activism, 300-year-old remains of former slaves, and the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act have do with each other?
On Thursday, April 24, Dr. Michelle Martin-Baron, Assistant Professor of Women's Studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, will present a lecture, "Why Feminists Should Care About Funerals: the Politics of Public Mourning." This talk will use a feminist approach to explore what each of these examples can tell us about public mourning practices.
Women's Rights National Historical Park and Hobart and William Smith Colleges will conclude the popular "Sentiments & Declarations" lecture series on April 24 with Dr. Martin-Baron's lecture. This six-part lecture series, held from Fall, 2013, through Spring, 2014, has explored national and international aspects of women's rights and feminism.
"We have been honored to have the Hobart and William Smith Colleges' lecture series at Women's Rights National Historical Park and we have been thrilled with the public's response to the programs," says Superintendent Ami Ghazala. "Attendance has been high, and the various topics spurred discussion and debate with visitors and rangers alike." added Ghazala.
This lecture will begin at 5:00 pm in the Guntzel Theater, Women's Rights National Historical Park, 136 Fall Street, Seneca Falls, NY. Admission is free.
