Elevated Fire Risk in Lake Clark and Iliamna Lake Region

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 9, 2014. It is reproduced in full below.

Port Alsworth, Alaska - Conditions are extremely dry in the Lake Clark and Iliamna Lake region and expected to stay that way through next week. With these dry conditions any new fires that start will spread quickly. Please use caution with campfires, off-road vehicles, recreational activities, and anything that could start a wildfire. The State of Alaska Division of Forestry has requested residents refrain from burning. Open burning is discouraged until weather conditions change. Early melt and warm temperatures have created higher fire risk than is normally experienced in mid-May.
