Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve is pleased to announce three courses that will be offered in partnership with the University of Alaska Fairbanks this summer. All of these courses will be based in historic Coal Creek Camp, a restored mining camp only a few miles from the Yukon River in the heart of the Preserve. A pre-course orientation will be provided in Fairbanks. Course fees include food, lodging, and transportation by boat from Eagle to the camp. Students provide their own transportation to Eagle. Opportunities for carpooling from Fairbanks may exist.
Wilderness Writing: July 6-10
Instructor: Award-wining author, Gretel Ehrlich
The wilds of the Yukon River will inspire students as they gain insight into how to take field notes and turn them into finished essays or poems.
Beginning Field Painting: July 10-13
Instructor: Renowned Alaska artist, Bill Brody
Explore the process of landscape painting from small drawings or painted studies to finished oil and acrylic paintings.
The Wild Side of Education Teacher’s Workshop: July 18-22
Instructor: National Park Service Education Specialist, Laurie Smith
Journey the Yukon River, learn about current research taking place in the Preserve, and be immersed in the geology, ecology, and gold rush history of the area. Participants will use these real-life examples and experiences to create lesson plans for use back in the classroom.
