Boater Fatality on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon, Ariz.,On Tuesday, June 3 at approximately 7:20 p.m. the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a call via satellite phone reporting a female in and out of consciousness from an apparent allergic reaction at river mile 168 on the Colorado River.

The victim became unconscious and members of the group initiated CPR. Arizona Department of Public Safety personnel, responding by helicopter, also provided life support; however all attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful. The 54 year old victim has been identified as Kathy Newman of Seattle, WA. The group was on day five of a seven day commercial river trip.

An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner. No further information is available at this time.
