Construction To Begin On Gardiner Gateway Project Improvements
GARDINER, Mont. (August 6, 2014) - Construction is about to get underway within the community of Gardiner Montana at the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park.
This is the beginning of nearly $15 million worth of infrastructure improvements funded through the Federal Lands Access Program, which includes nearly $2 million in local match from Park County, Montana and the National Park Service. Federal Highway Administration Western Federal Lands Division in cooperation with the Gardiner Gateway Project partners plan to celebrate completion of a major portion of the project in conjunction with the National Park Service Centennial in 2016. Funding for additional community enhancements is actively being pursued by project partners.
During the summer the community of fewer than 600 year-round residents hosts over 1.3 million visitors in connection with their visit to Yellowstone. The project is designed to improve deficiencies to infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion, enhance parking, and provide for better pedestrian accessibility as well as increased vehicle and pedestrian safety.
Murtagh Municipal Engineering and the Gardiner Water and Sewer District have awarded the construction contract for this initial utility work to Montana based contractor Dick Anderson Construction. Heavy equipment is being moved into Gardiner to begin the installation of new domestic and storm water lines along Main Street (within Park County, Mont.) and Park Street (inside Yellowstone National Park).
