BOULDER CITY, NEV. -The following events are happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Sept. 21 through Nov. 11.
Ranger Program: Lake Mead's Underwater Treasures, Sept 20
Learn about the underwater resting place of the B-29 super-fortress that crashed in Lake Mead in 1948. Programs will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Lake Mead Visitor Center. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
Ranger Program: Water, Who Needs It?, Sept 21
Desert environments require many adaptations for water use. Rangers will share animal responses to desert temperatures and water use as well as human needs. Programs will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Lake Mead Visitor Center. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
Fee-free day, Sept 27
Entrance fees will be waived at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Sept. 27 for National Public Lands Day. Fees for camping, lake use or use of concessions still apply.
National Public Lands Day, Sept 27
Celebrate National Public Lands Day 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 27 by joining Lake Mead staff in cleaning up Government Wash, an area that was heavily used by summer visitors. National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. Each year more than 150,000 volunteers build trails and bridges, remove trash and invasive plants, plant trees and restore water resources. Individuals, families and groups are encouraged to participate. National Public Lands Day Laughlin Event, Sept 27
Rangers will be at the National Public Lands Day event at the Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trails in Laughlin. This event includes a fun run at 7 a.m. (register at (702) 298-3413) and exhibit and activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. These activities include: live horse education and horse rides, fishing activities, stewardship scavenger hunt, volunteer stewardship project (register at (702) 277-2770), live desert animals and even a raffle at 12:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. at the Pyramid Day Use area. There will be two ranger-led hikes, at the event. At 11 a.m., join the moderate one-hour history hike to learn about the rich history of the area from the geologic past to the building of Davis Dam. Departs from the Equestrian Parking Lot. At 1 p.m., join the moderate one-hour desert plants and animals hike to learn about the many plant and animal species in the area. Departs from the North Reach Trailhead.
Ranger Program: Lake Mead Rocks: A Geological History, Sept 28
Go back in time long before Lake Mead existed to learn about how the landscape of the recreation area has changed over millions of years from tropical shallow seas to fiery volcanoes. Programs will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Lake Mead Visitor Center. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
C.A.S.T. for Kids, Oct 4
Nearly 40 children with disabilities will have the opportunity to enjoy a quality outdoor recreational experience through the sport of fishing at the annual C.A.S.T. for Kids event at Las Vegas Boat Harbor 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 4. IRONMAN 70.3 Silverman Triathlon, Oct 5
Around 2,600 athletes will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area Oct. 5 during the IRONMAN 70.3 Silverman Triathlon. The swim portion of the race takes place at Boulder Beach. Then, athletes will bike along Lakeshore and Northshore roads. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays along Lakeshore and Northshore roads. Drivers should use caution when passing cyclists. Cyclists are reminded that they must bike in single file on the roadways. Cycling abreast is not permitted within Lake Mead NRA. 50th Anniversary Art Show, Lecture, Oct 8
Lake Mead National Recreation Area turns 50 on Oct. 8. Discover the hidden beauty and grace of the park's history through the lens and brush of Nevada artist and naturalist Sharon K. Schafer at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Lake Mead Visitor Center. This entertaining multimedia program of music, stories and images, explores the stunning natural beauty of the region's inspiring wildlands and provides viewers with a different perspective on the wilderness of Southern Nevada. Lake Mead 50th Anniversary Celebration, Oct 11
Commemorate Lake Mead's 50th Anniversary at the annual Cottonwood Cove Eco Dive Oct. 11 by volunteering, exploring and celebrating. Volunteers will help beautify the marina area both on land and underwater from 9 a.m. to noon. Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt, free lunch and will be registered to win a variety of prizes.
