Beach Hazards Statement Issued for Point Reyes National Seashore through Thursday, November 13, 2014

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Nov. 12, 2014. It is reproduced in full below.

A beach hazards statement for sneaker waves and rip currents has been issued for areas along the coast including Point Reyes National Seashore. A storm in the Bering Sea has generated long period swells which have entered coastal waters. These conditions will be in effect through Thursday afternoon.

A beach hazard statement for sneaker waves means that conditions are present to support a heightened risk of unsuspecting beach goers being swept into the ocean by a wave. People walking along the beach should never turn their back to the ocean. Fisherman should avoid fishing from rocks or jetties. Swimmers caught in rip currents should swim parallel to the coast to escape the rip current before trying to swim for shore. Swimmers should always swim near a lifeguard.

Be sure to always have your eyes on the ocean.
