In the spirit of the eminent radio pioneer Reginald Fessenden, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site will be commemorating World Radio Day, Feb. 13, 2015.
While preforming experiments between Roanoke Island and Hatteras Island, North Carolina from 1901 to 1902, Professor Fessenden greatly improved his technology to send and receive the sounds of voice and music through the air. By 1906 in New England, Fessenden publically demonstrated the technology with a radio broadcast by playing his violin and quoting a passage from the Bible. Today, radio is the mass media reaching the widest audience in the world.
In celebration of World Radio Day, the staff at Fort Raleigh will be posting to the park's social media feeds information on the history of radio, radio pioneers, and Reginald Fessenden throughout the entire week of the February 8th. Fort Raleigh NHS social media feeds are:

World Radio Day is sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to improve international cooperation between broadcasters and encourage the radio community to promote access to information, freedom of expression and gender equality over the airwaves.
