Petrified Forest National Park Celebrates Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month

Petrified Forest, AZ -March is Arizona Archaeology and

Heritage Awareness Month. Events throughout Arizona celebrate the state's

cultural history with special presentations. We invite you to join us at Petrified Forest National

Park with the following events in March:

Archaeology Exhibit

WHERE: Painted Desert Inn

WHAT: Enjoy an exhibit that showcases the 10,000+ year human history of

Petrified Forest

WHEN: Daily, 10am-4pm

Cultural Demonstrations

WHERE: Painted Desert Inn

WHAT: Cultural demonstrators with ancestral ties to the area share engaging

skills and traditions

WHEN: Daily, 10am-4pm

Puerco Pueblo Tour

WHERE: Puerco Pueblo

WHAT: Explore remains of an ancestral Puebloan village. 0.3 mile (0.5 km) walk

on a paved loop. Immediately following, an additional 0.5 mi (0.8 km) walk on a

dirt road will occur for those interested in seeing additional park petroglyphs

WHEN: The following Fridays - March 6, 13 &the following Saturdays-March

7, 14, 21, 28 Allow 45 minutes for the Puerco Pueblo walk, 60 minutes more for

the additional petroglyphs

NOTE: Bring comfortable walking shoes, hat, water, sunscreen

Harvey Girls

WHERE: Painted Desert Inn

WHAT: Interact with reenactors and enjoy artifacts of the famous Fred Harvey

Company

WHEN: Saturday March 28, 10am-4pm

Guided Backcountry Hikes

WHERE: Locations vary; see below

WHAT: Enjoy guided hikes into lesser seen archaeological sites

NOTES: Bring comfortable walking shoes, hat, water, sunscreen. Suitable for

children comfortable walking the distances associated with each hike; at least

eight years of age is recommended. For hikes that require advanced signup,

WHEN: All hikes below begin at 10 am

Sunday March 8

Stagecoach Stop Hike: Hike to a historic stagecoach stop and enjoy petroglyphs

associated with the site. Hike is about 2 mi (3.2 km) round trip on varied, uneven

terrain. The hike is limited to 15 people and advanced signup is required.

Allow about 3 hours

Wednesday March 11:

Agate Mesa Hike: Hike in the park's central area looking at Puebloan

archaeology. Hike about 1.6 mi (2.4 km) round trip on varied, uneven terrain. The

hike is limited to 15 people and advanced signup is required. Allow about 2

hours

Sunday March 15:

McCreery Pueblo Hike: Hike to an impressive 800-year-old great kiva site;this

site is normally closed to the public. Hike is about 1.6 mi (2.4 km) round trip

on varied, uneven terrain. The hike is limited to 15 people and advanced signup

is required. Allow about 2 hours

Wednesday March 25:

Historic Route 66 Hike: Petrified Forest is the only National Park with a

portion of Route 66 inside its boundaries! Enjoy a 2 mi (3.2 km) round trip hike

along an old roadbed portion of the Mother Road to learn of its important

history. No advanced signup is required. Meet at Painted Desert Visitor Center.

Allow about 2 hours

Monday March 30:

Lacey Point Hike: Hike off trail into the Painted Desert to discover some of

the best petroglyphs in the park. Hike is approximately 2.5 mi (4 km) round

trip on varied uneven terrain, and is considered moderately difficult. The hike

is limited to 15 people and advanced signup is required. Allow about 3 hours
