Pipestone National Monument Guest Speaker Series
Pipestone National Monument announces the third presentation in this year's Guest Speaker Series at the Pipestone Performing Arts Center, Pipestone, Minnesota, on Saturday, August 8th, 2015 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Guest speaker, Jim Kersten, founder of the 254-mile Sioux Quartzite Outcrop Trail, will present a lecture and slide show entitled "The Sioux Quartzite Outcrop Trail".
The presentation will discuss the Sioux Quartzite formations along a trail, which leads to 10 primary sites, nine secondary locations, and over two dozen historical attractions in SD, MN, and IA that feature Sioux quartzite naturally or architecturally. He will also share his knowledge on the development of the trail and its significance for understanding geology and history in the region.
Sioux Quartzite is unique from a cultural, archeological, and historic perspective. During the prehistoric & historic periods, American Indian peoples of the region carved petroglyphs (ancient rock art) onto Sioux Quartzite boulders and rocks. Sioux quartzite outcroppings are the region's most unique geological feature. The outcrops of Sioux quartzite start at Redstone in East New Ulm, MN and extend 180 miles west to Rockport Colony along the James River, south of Mitchell, SD. The north-south band of outcrops is about 40miles wide.
