Washington, DC - On August 4, 2015, at approximately 2:30 pm the U.S. Park Police received a report of a fight in progress at the intersection of 17thand Independence Avenue, SW. Once on scene, witnesses advised officers of possible shots fired from within a vehicle at the intersection of 17th and Independence Avenue SW. There was evidence on scene to support the report;however, neither the vehicle nor its occupants remained at the location. The vehicle in question was identified as a white Hyundai with NY tags traveling toward Rock Creek Parkway.
A firearm, as well as other potential evidentiary items, were located in the travel lanes of Rock Creek Parkway in the area of the Kennedy Center. As a result, street closures were put into effect on the Rock Creek Parkway and the items were collected as potential evidence.
At approximately 5 pm U.S. Park Police officers located and pursued a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle. The operator and sole occupant of the Hyundai was apprehended and identified as Maurice Holmes,30 years old out of Washington, DC at Connecticut Avenue and Van Ness Street, NW. Holmes was charged with fleeing to elude law enforcement.
A second subject was located, questioned, and released without charges.His identity will not be released as he is being treated as a witness. Detectives are actively pursuing leads in an attempt to identify a third involved subject.
At this time we know there was an altercation between several subjects who were all passengers within the same vehicle, the Hyundai. As a result, at least one shot was fired, which shattered the passenger side rear window. We have located and interviewed two of the three occupants neither of whom has a gunshot wound. Detectives are pursuing leads and requesting assistance in identifying and locating the third subject.
