On Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., Washita Battlefield National Historic Site will host Park Rangers Don Yates and Vickie Skidmore from Chickasaw National Recreation Area. They will discus the need to preserve the darkness of our night sky from the pressing issues of cities expanding into the suburbs and rural areas building bigger football stadiums with bright Friday night lights. Come learn what you can do regardless of where your home falls on the bortle scale, to help keep our dark skies dark for future generations.
At 7:30 p.m. Rangers will use a telescope with a solar lens to view the sun, plus enjoy s'mores made in a solar oven. A presentation about preserving the night sky will begin at 8:00 p.m. in the park's visitor center theater. After the presentation, participants are invited to travel to Croton Creek Wildlife viewing area, about 8 miles from the park, where Rangers will provide a tour of the night sky. Dress accordingly and bring a flashlight.
