Berlin, MD -Assateague Island National Seashore will begin storm preparations and a systematic park closure in anticipation of Hurricane Joaquin to ensure the safety of park visitors, park employees and protection of park infrastructure. The following closures will go into effect in the Maryland district of Assateague Island National Seashore:

·The Over-Sand Vehicle route will close Wednesday, September 30 at 8:00 pm and is anticipated to remain closed until the storm has passed.

·All national seashore campgrounds will close Friday, October 2 at 12:00 pm. Campers with existing reservations will be notified by the reservation company, recreation.gov.

·The Assateague Island National Seashore Visitor Center will be closed Sunday, October 4 until the storm passes.

·An island-wide closure is anticipated to occur Sunday, October 4 at 12:00 pm.

All closures are subject to change as we follow the path of Hurricane Joaquin. Powerful hurricanes and coastal storms over the years have taught hard lessons at Assateague Island National Seashore and other coastal areas. Pre-storm preparation and planning for the protection of visitors, staff and island resources is key. Please check our website www.nps.gov/asis, Facebook, and Twitter for updates.
