Harkers Island, NC -The National Park Service continues recovery efforts and has made significant progress to reopen the few areas of the Seashore that remain closed to the public.
With these efforts the following areas of the park will reopen to the public today, Oct. 13, 2015:
* Portsmouth Village (by ferry service only)
* Cape Lookout Village
On Friday, October 9, the Beaufort Visitor Information Center, the Harker's Island Visitor Center, Shackleford and portions of North and South Core Banks, including the Light Station Visitor Center, Great Island Cabins and Long Point Cabins were reopened to the public. Off-road vehicles were also allowed to return to the islands in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
All reservations for Great Island and Long Pont cabins should be confirmed through Recreation.gov by calling customer service at 888-448-1474, prior to traveling to the park. Also, Island Express Ferry Service from Harkers Island and Beaufort have resumed service.
The following areas will remain closed to the public due to flooding until further notice:
* Portsmouth Village Road (via Portsmouth Flats) on North Core Banks
