The National Park Service (NPS) is proposing changes to the recreational fire program at Ocean Beach in order to create a safe and sustainable program that addresses environmental impacts and public safety concerns while creating a high quality user experience. Key elements of the proposed program include a permit system, winter restrictions to promote better air quality, more durable fire rings and a maintenance and outreach partnership with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department (SFRPD).
There is a long tradition of beach fires on Ocean Beach predating the establishment of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) in 1972. Pilot Beach Fire Programs were implemented by the NPS in 2007 and 2014 to address outstanding concerns and included public outreach and education, established fire rings, a greater law enforcement presence, and an active monitoring program. The current proposal is based on experience gained during these pilot programs as well as feedback gathered from key stakeholders and during public meetings earlier this year.
“Our proposed beach fire program enables the valued tradition of beach fires at Ocean Beach to continue in a more sustainable way," said Deputy Superintendent Aaron Roth. “Our intent is to create a program with the community that addresses long-standing public safety, public health, education, and environmental concerns, while enabling the meaningful and quality experience people expect and deserve."
