It was announced this week that Petrified Forest National Park is one of 63 park units across the country who will receive Centennial Challenge federal matching funds to partner with targeted private sector donations. In November, American Express announced a donation of $150,000 to the National Trust for Historic Preservation toward the restoration of the glass storefront on the historic Painted Desert Oasis building at park headquarters. The matching funds of $143,000 are expected to result in the storefront being restored by the end of the year. The National Trust designated the Painted Desert Community Complex a "National Treasure" in 2014 and began a partnership with the park on the sustainable rehabilitation of the Complex. The Centennial Challenge is so named because 2016 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service.
