Santa Barbara Island Closed: Damaged Dock Restricts Access

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Jan. 20, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

The Santa Barbara Island landing dock is closed temporarily until damages caused by this weekend's high surf are fully assessed and repaired.

The landing dock is the only access point for the public to visit the island. The high surf destroyed the public landing and access ladders. Some of the pier pilings snapped and will need to be replaced.

Santa Barbara Island is the smallest and one of the least visited islands within Channel Islands National Park. It is located over 50 miles from Ventura and about 24 miles from neighboring Catalina Island.
